On the basis of reports received from its Monitors in the field, CMEV has written to the Commissioner of Elections strongly urging him to take serious action including annulment of the poll in the following :

1) Polling Centre No 44 –Suduwella Primary School, Chilaw Pradeshiya Sabha
2) Nawalapitiya Urban Council
3) Trincomalee Urban Council


CMEV Monitor reports include incidents of the chasing away of Opposition Polling Agents, systematic impersonation, forcible prevention of voters from entering Polling Centres, assault and threat.

CMEV has also received reports alleging that the Police were in certain instances not entertaining complaints and in the instances that they were, no follow up action had been taken.


CMEV was formed in 1997 by the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA), the Free Media Movement (FMM) and the Coalition Against Political Violence as an independent and non-partisan organisation to monitor the incidence of election related violence.
