Local Government Elections 2002
Wednesday 20th March 2002 - 2nd Release

LIST OF SERIOUSLY FLAWED LOCAL GOVERNMENT POLLS [ Update ]
(Based on Information Received by CMEV as at 2.30 pm)

CMEV monitored the local government elections in only 60 local government bodies on March 20, 2002. Of these 17 (well over 25%) were found to be Seriously Flawed by 2.30 pm. The perpetrators of the election violence were clearly members of the United National Front (UNF), and in some cases Ministers and senior politicians and/or their supporters have been identified by eye-witnesses. The acts of violence include intimidation and threatening of voters and monitors, the use of firearms, murder and stabbing, the chasing out and/or assault of Polling Agents of the other parties, ballot stuffing, and damage to property.
